Majority of arthritis sufferers in the UAE are overweight or obese
In a recent study conducted by Dr. Humeira Badsha it was found that 113 out of 182 (62%) rheumatoid arthritis patients were overweight or obese. These patients had a BMI greater than 25, and 28 % of females and 21% of males had a BMI greater than 30 which is in the obese category. Commenting on the results Dr. Humeira Badsha, Rheumatologist in Dubai said that Obesty significantly raised the risk of arthritis by placing excess weight on joints . “Every kilo you gain places a 5 kilo strain on your joints”, she said. In a recent study researchers analyzed data from more than 238,000 U.S. women who took part in the large, long-running investigation of women’s health known as the Nurses’ Health Study (women aged 30 to 55) and the Nurses’ Health Study II (women aged 25 to 42). Obeses women had a 73% higher chance of developing Rheumatoid arthritis. The statistics are alarming according to Dr. Badsha , who urges people to exercise more and follow a healthy diet. At the Humeira Badsha Medical center a specialized team focuses on weight loss through a medically supervised program with a team including an Endocronologist, Nutritionist and physiotherapist.Website: http://www.drbadshamedical.com
