SAATHI - Dubai
In Dubai and all across United Arab Emirates, there are several individuals with different abilities who are challenged with Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Downs Syndrome, Attention Deficit Disorder, Dyslexia, Aspergers, hearing, vision, mobility/physical needs or other multiple challenges. Though confirmed statistics are not available, it is estimated that the number would run into thousands with a significant number belonging to the Indian expatriate community. Although several organizations dedicated to the care and education of persons with disabilities are operating over the past few years, significant challenges still exist in terms of awareness and integration into the society. The need for a concerted and cohesive approach to is very critical to their development and acceptance into the society with due dignity and empathy. Formed in 2009, SAATHI is a community initiative under the patronage of the Consulate General of India, Dubai to work towards an inclusive society and empower the families and persons with disabilities. SAATHI’s objectives reflect the critical requirements of people with different abilities: - To facilitate Inclusion of individuals of all ages, and disabilities in society. - To work towards Empowerment of families by providing information, training, mentoring, counseling, respite care and a forum to network. - To act as an advocacy group to highlight the needs of families and individuals and create awareness in society of rights of persons with different abilities. - To provide opportunities to persons with different abilities by organizing events to show-case their talent and potential. - To support the mainstream teachers/ volunteers by providing training and information. - To actively collaborate with the local authorities in promoting the interests of persons with different abilities.
