Gallery Isabelle van den Eynde
Gallery Isabelle van den Eynde (prev. B21) has discovered and nurtured the talent of some of the most promising figures in the Middle East’s contemporary art scene. A generation of artists – including the likes of Rokni and Ramin Haerizadeh, Reza Aramesh, Khosrow Hassanzadeh, Bita Fayyazi, Jeffar Khaldi, Ahmad Amin Nazar, Leila Pazooki, Nargess Hashemi, Shadi Ghadirian, Lara Baladi, Fereydoun Ave and Farideh Lashai – has emerged from the gallery’s focused tutelage, attracting the attention of adventurous collectors and curators, as well as prestigious institutions from the region and beyond. Having recently moved to a larger space in an industrial quarter near the centre of Dubai, Gallery Isabelle van den Eynde showcases an intense and innovative program of exhibitions that break conventional understandings of art coming out of the Middle East. The gallery publishes accompanying catalogue material for each exhibition. Current Exhibition: Zoulikha Bouabdellah Set Me Free from My Chains 2010 About the Exhibit: Dubai’s Gallery IVDE, the former B21 Gallery, hosts an installation by Algerian artist Zoulikha Bouabdellah. Giant and colorful Arabic letters hang from the wall forming the sentence Set Me Free from My Chains, which creates a remarkably visceral spectacle. Deceptively simple, the elements are familiar - strings of neon twisted to form colourful letters, yet their unconventional positioning and movement are suggestive of Hobb (Arabic for love), the product of a rigorous process of conceptual and formal reasoning, which defies the border between representation and abstraction.
