Key Sporting events in Dubai

Dubai is fast becoming the home of some of the biggest sporting events in the World. This is only set to grow further in the coming years. Whether this be for the Cliff Diving World series final, or the Beach Soccer Intercontinental Cup Dubai for example. Here we cover three of the biggest sporting events that take place in Dubai.

Dubai World Cup Carnival – Horse Racing

The Carnival takes place between January and March each year, with 10 meetings taking place at Meydan racecourse. There is a vast amount of prize money on offer, worth more than US$10m, which is why horses are targeted on the meetings from around the world. This then culminates with Dubai World Cup day, which is the richest day of racing in the world. Those attending the racecourse can expect a fantastic and memorable experience, in which they can tailor to any needs from seating to five star all-inclusive dining. Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships

Known as the Dubai Open, it is part of the ATP and WTA World tours. The event was founded back in 1993, and has continued to grow in statue in the last 26 years. This was shown in the fact that in 2001 the ATP upgraded the tournament from a 250 level to a more prestigious 500 level tournament. The prize money on offer for both the Women’s and Men’s fields has now pushed to just over US$2,887,895, which is why it has continued to draw a number of the biggest names in the sport. The tournament takes place at the end of February each year, with the Swiss pair of Roger Federer and Belinda Bencic the current champions.

DP World Tour Championship Golf Tournament

The event was established in 2009, and has quickly grown into a popular event for many players on the European tour. It is also the venue for the European tour race to Dubai. This meant it replaced the previous Volvo Masters. The prize money on offer has now risen to $8,000,000 as of 2012. It is played each year in November, and the current champion is England’s Danny Willett. The course record is also held by Henrik Stenson from 2013, when he shot a 25 under par.
