The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, UNHCR, is organising an awareness programme in collaboration with its strategic partner, Ibn Battuta Mall, under the theme, "Be the light for refugees" throughout the Holy Month of Ramadan, until 6th June, 2019.
The programme includes a model of a Refugee Housing Unit, allowing visitors to experience the journey of refugees through virtual reality devices. It also enables supporters to show their solidarity with the refugees by sharing their wishes for them through social media.
"During Ramadan, most of us celebrate the spirituality of the Holy Month surrounded by family and friends. However, millions of refugees and internally displaced persons are observing the month in difficult conditions, away from their homes and separated from their loved ones. We take this opportunity to urge everyone to show their solidarity with the displaced families," said Houssam Chahine, Head of UNHCR Private Sector Partnerships in the Middle East and North Africa.
Omar Khoory, Managing Director, Nakheel Malls, owner and operator of Ibn Battuta Mall, said, "We are delighted to play our part in raising awareness about the plight of refugees through this unique initiative."
UNHCR recently launched its Ramadan campaign aimed at supporting 24,000 refugees and displaced families in Jordan, Lebanon, Yemen, Iraq, Mauritania and Egypt until Ramadan next year. There are 68.5 million people who have been forcibly displaced due to wars and persecution worldwide, according to UNHCR’s statistics as of June 2018.
