Young problem-solvers from across the UAE are developing skills that could help them secure future jobs – while exploring issues surrounding 21st century mobility – with the help of Expo 2020 Dubai and a fleet of miniature robots.
The Expo School Programme’s ‘Tinkering Workshop’ is enabling students to explore new technologies and innovations related to Expo’s key subtheme of Mobility by challenging young people to consider possible solutions to the ‘last mile’ challenge – the task of moving people or goods from a transport hub to their final destination.
At the start of each session, students are introduced to ‘Ozobots’ – miniature robots that can be programmed to follow specific routes using colour-coded marker pens. The children are then asked to complete a last mile delivery mission by guiding their Ozobots through an obstacle course, helping develop their coding and problem-solving skills.
The workshop introduces young people to the basics of coding in a fun and engaging environment. In addition to encouraging students to think about the types of skills that may be useful in their future careers, the initiative invites them to explore possible solutions to global challenges that their generation will need to overcome.
Exploring these topics with UAE schools is vital because young students have a key role to play in bringing to life Expo 2020’s theme of ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’.
