The Spain Pavilion Celebrates The Nation’s Arabic Influence
(12 February 2019)
The conical structure tells a story of tolerance, collaboration and progress through the ages

Spain will evoke the feel of a traditional town square and explore its interwoven history with the Arab world at its Expo 2020 Dubai pavilion.

Built from reusable materials including wood, iron and fabric, the structure will be situated in the Sustainability District. Its conical shape will increase air flow, providing an eco-friendly way for visitors to keep cool, while the underground positioning of its exhibition area will also naturally reduce temperatures.

The visitor experience will tell a rich mixture of stories that highlight Spain’s cultural and historical roots, as well as its modern-day innovations and environmental initiatives.

Visitors can step back in time, journeying through almost 800 years of Islamic rule in Spain from the eighth to the 15th centuries.

Recognised as a progressive era that fostered tolerance between diverse peoples, it introduced a wealth of scientific, social and creative advances. Libraries, colleges and public baths were established during this period, while literature, poetry and architecture flourished.

The pavilion will delve into Spain’s history of global discovery and exchange, becoming the first nation to voyage around the world and establish initial connections with Latin America.

Spain will also look to the future, outlining its forward-thinking approach to sustainability and promoting its world-leading capabilities in organ transplant and donation.

Visitors seeking a Spanish-style break will find small urban squares scattered throughout the pavilion, where they can chat over coffee and enjoy a spot of shopping.

These spaces will also link to the exhibition area, ensuring that the programme of entertainment connects with a wide and appreciative audience.
