The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) hosted the coordination meeting between the UAE and Saudi Arabia in the field of ICT at its headquarters in Dubai. The delegation of Saudi Arabia included representatives of the Digital Transformation Unit, Digital Technology Development Agency, E-Government Program (Yesser), National Center for Digital Certification, Communications and Information Technology Commission, and international partnerships.
The two-day meeting aims to enhance cooperation and coordination between the two countries in the ICT sector, develop work in joint programs, entrepreneurship, innovation, HR qualification, and other topics of mutual interest in this vital sector.
Commenting on this meeting, H.E. Hamad Obaid Al Mansouri, TRA Director General, said: "This meeting comes at a time when the UAE-Saudi relations, under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE and his brother the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, are witnessing great progress in all fields based on solid foundations of brotherhood, vision, attitudes and future aspirations. The TRA is keen to activate all initiatives and projects with the competent authorities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which contribute to achieving mutually beneficial major leaps in the telecommunications sector.”
The Director General pointed out that the meeting agenda included the discussion of many issues and ideas that would serve and develop the ICT sector in the two countries, adding: The meeting will review the experiences of the two countries in the ICT sector, during which both sides will share research, review how to activate the role of society in open data and other issues that will have a significant impact on promoting cooperation between the two countries, thus positively affecting the sector in the near future.”
The participant groups discussed the meeting agenda items, where the UAE side reviewed ICT-related international indicators and UAE’s experience in this area, and measured digital transformation in the UAE.
The two sides also worked on a joint study on e-commerce and its impact on both countries, updating and implementing e-commerce transaction laws, and the development of a supporting regulatory environment. The sides also discussed means of cooperation in the technology development fund, training and qualification of technical human resources, and work on the preparation of a standard business model for e-learning and e-training.
The meeting addressed topics of e-participation, licensing and monitoring of Certification Service Providers (CSP) activities, and the optimal ways of sharing communications infrastructure resources and dealing with disasters.
During the meeting, the two sides reaffirmed the need to intensify cooperation to explore methods of developing legal and regulatory instruments related to data protection, exchange experiences and expertise on a number of topics such as 5G network deployment, and enhancing coordination and cooperation to reflect international positions on ICT-related issues.
The meeting also included a visit by the Saudi delegation to the mGovernment Centre of Digital Innovation where they were briefed on its advanced training programs covering various technical, managerial and leadership topics. They also learned about its role in promoting citizens’ trust in mobile services by improving the quality and security of apps that offer electronic services.
