The Dubai Host Town Committee held an orientation meeting on Saturday to help prepare volunteers ahead of the delegation’s arrival for the Host Town Programme – part of the Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019.
The orientation was held to ensure volunteers are qualified to support all athletes participating in the World Games and activities during the Host Town Programme run smoothly – helping create a ‘lasting legacy’ aligned with the aspirations of UAE’s leadership.
Held at the Dubai Police Officers Club in the presence of H.E Abdulla Al Basti, Secretary General of The Executive Council of Dubai, the orientation gathered over 500 volunteers who are keen to participate and embodied the hospitable spirit of the UAE.
Attendees included volunteers, supporting government entities, representatives of private schools that will receive participants in the ‘Adopt a Nation’ programme, as well as private-sector representatives supporting the athletes’ recreational programmes.
During the meeting, representatives stressed on the importance of hosting this global sporting event as well as Dubai’s readiness and capabilities to organise and execute large-scale international events.
Attendees also learned about the UAE’s efforts and the many government initiatives aimed at empowering people of determination and promoting their participation and inclusion in society as productive, creative individuals capable of achieving excellence.
Dr. Amna Al Mazmi, Director of Social Development Policies and Strategies at the General Secretariat of the Executive Council of Dubai, and Dubai’s representative in the Host Town Committee, said: “The large number of volunteers supporting this event is testament to the cohesion and inclusivity embedded within the UAE community. The volunteers play a big role in the Host Town program, working closely with the organising committees to implement programmes and initiatives that will enhance interaction between the UAE and other countries present in the Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019 - creating a positive experience for people of determination.
“In line with our efforts to achieve the programme’s objectives and bolster UAE’s efforts to promote inclusion, we conducted an orientation session for our volunteers to help them work seamlessly with the Special Olympics athletes and their families. We also seek to enhance communication between Emirati people and other cultures while also promoting the exchange of expertise and experiences – underlining commonalities between participating countries.”
The Special Olympics World Games 2019 will take place in Abu Dhabi from 14-21 March. The event will gather over 7,000 athletes and 3,000 coaches from 197 countries, who will be competing in 24 sports.
