Emirates Aviation University Hosts 4th Edition Of Water Rocket Challenge
(28 January 2020)

More than 200 students from 20 schools across the UAE came together yesterday to participate in an exciting Water Rocket Challenge exclusively sponsored by Boeing and hosted for the fourth time by the university.

The challenge, which took place at Emirates Aviation University’s campus in Dubai Academic City, has become famously interesting to students within science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) stream. To win the challenge, participating students were asked to design and construct a rocket with the best aerodynamic design that can cover the greatest distance from a launch pad set at 45 degrees with applied pressure of 50PSI.

Dr Ahmad Al Ali, Vice-Chancellor of Emirates Aviation University said: “The Water Rocket Challenge targets high school students and was developed to allow them to broaden their creativity and further experiment in the field of aerodynamics. We congratulate the participants on completing the challenge and are delighted to see the capabilities of our young and smart students. We thank Boeing for their support and for making this challenge a success”.

Students from Al Maaref Private School Dubai came out as the winners, achieving the distance of 97.3 metres with their uniquely-designed rocket while Taryam American Private School Sharjah came in as a second runner up achieving the distance of 103.5 meters. The final result was based on two factors; distance and rocket design.

“We are extremely proud of this initiative and our partnership with Emirates Aviation University. Every year we leave impressed and inspired by what students are able to build with just their creativity and own two hands. Through programs like this, students gain the opportunity to apply the theories they learn in class and gain essential skills needed to positively contribute to UAE’s growing aerospace industry,” said Bernard Dunn, president of Boeing Middle East, North Africa, and Turkey

Operating on the principle of Newton’s third law of motion, the water rocket concept was meant to prepare all budding engineers when enrolling in any of Emirates Aviation University’s (EAU) many Engineering and aviation related programmes. EAU’s Engineering programmes include Bachelor’s Degree in Aeronautical Engineering, Aerospace Technology, Avionics Technology, Aviation Maintenance Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Software Engineering, Optimisation and Statistics.
