TRA And Expo 2020 Enhance Cooperation
(8 May 2019)

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) and the Dubai Expo 2020 Bureau, have agreed to enhance cooperation in several areas such as organizing the use of ICT systems and devices, and encouraging the participation of government entities in the programs launched by the center to host Expo 2020 Dubai.

A delegation from TRA, headed by H.E. Hamad Obaid Al Mansoori, TRA Director General visited Dubai Expo 2020 Bureau, where the delegation was briefed on the work progress and the phases of construction and technical works for hosting this international event, which is the first World Expo ever held in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia.

H.E. Hamad Obaid Al Mansoori, TRA Director General, praised the achieved progress in the Expo 2020, stressing that the event will be a milestone in the economic development process and a major economic and investment attraction element in the UAE, which has become a regional and global economic hub.

H.E. Al Mansoori, said: “The successful UAE bid in 2013 to host a World Expo2020 was a milestone in the history of the UAE, as it placed the country on the map of major events hosts and organizers. From the first moment of announcing the success of the UAE bid to host this major global event, the UAE has turned, under our wise leadership directives, into a big workshop, in which the government and federal entities formed one team to implement a version expected to be among the most successful ones in the history of the Expo. Hence the aim to enhance cooperation between TRA and the Dubai Expo 2020 Bureau to create the infrastructure capable of meeting the ICT requirements of the event, which is expected to add the value of AED 122.6 billion to the UAE economy, with the participation of 190 countries and expectation of receiving more than 25 million visits.”

H.E. Al Mansoori added: “Dubai and the UAE’s bet on such events is based on the principle of economic sustainability and diversification of economic resources away from exclusive dependence on natural resources. Thus, the Expo 2020 is part of a set of high directions that governs the course of development in the country, such as the implementation of the concepts of artificial intelligence and the fourth industrial revolution, autonomous mobility, 3D printings, smart cities and Internet of Things (IoT).  The Expo 2020 also aims at enhancing the global cooperation known about the UAE throughout its history."

Najeeb Mohammed Al-Ali, Executive Director of the Dubai Expo 2020 Bureau, said: “We value this collaboration that aims to provide the best global technical services to participants and millions of visitors, with the purpose of organizing an exceptional event that elevates World Expo to unprecedented levels and reflects the development of the UAE in various fields under our wise leadership."

Al-Ali added: “We are collaborating continuously with TRA to achieve the Expo 2020 Dubai futuristic location for the six months from 20 October 2020 to 10 April 2021. Moreover, after the hosting, the site will become an attractive platform to businesses, innovative projects, and small and large local and international companies, by providing technical services that help to distinguish these projects and companies and support their growth locally, regionally and globally.”

The next phase will witness the enhancement of cooperation between the two parties regarding the coordination with the authorized media entity in the Expo to identify the frequency requirements of the international and local media agencies participating in the exhibition and to establish a mechanism for the submission of applications for spectrum permits. Additionally, it will enhance cooperation with regards to customs clearance to ensure the entry of all devices to the country in the appropriate manner.

The two parties will identify TRA’s needs of volunteers, and provide them with the necessary training to support TRA’s operations. A mechanism will be put in place for the entry of licensed devices into the premises of the Expo, and requests processing of custom release and allocation of wireless frequencies during the event.

The two parties also agreed to provide consultation and information as well as logistical support to the technical and administrative teams at the Expo 2020 premises, in addition to providing entry permits and security permits for TRA teams, equipment and devices, as well as coordination in the registration of individuals and companies and sharing information.

The two sides emphasized the need for cooperation concerning TRA’s Information and e-Government Sector in order to provide the relevant services in accordance with TRA’s rules and regulations, to achieve the objectives of Expo 2020 Dubai.
