Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation (Empower), the world’s largest district cooling services provider, announced increasing of its cooling capacity to 225,000 Refrigeration Tonnes (RT) in Business Bay by adding two new district cooling plants to the company’s existing three plants in the area. As a step, Empower signed a contract to design two new cooling plants, which will meet the growing demand for district cooling in Business Bay. The two plants combiningly will have a cooling capacity of 90,000 RT. Once the two new plants are operational, the total capacity of the project will reach 225,000 RT. Earlier in 2005, Empower has signed a master agreement to supply Business Bay area with 350,000 RT, in phases.
The new district cooling plants, which add to Empower’s 73 cooling plants as of 2017, are labelled as Business Bay 4 and Business Bay 5.
“Building two district cooling plants in Business Bay in Dubai is an important milestone for Empower and an addition to the district cooling plants we run in a number of prestigious projects in Dubai. These plants will enhance our ability to provide district cooling systems to all the buildings and projects in the Business Bay district,” said Ahmad Bin Shafar, CEO of Empower.
“The increase in the number of district cooling plants reflects the high demand for district cooling systems across the Emirate, and indicates the wide-spread of district cooling services in various sectors. This contributes to energy conservation, protection of the environment, preservation of natural resources, and saving maintenance and operational costs,” added Bin Shafar.
Empower stressed that new plants will be designed according to the highest global standards. They will be constructed according to the standards of sustainable green buildings and modern urban developments of Dubai, and as per the area’s surroundings and the architectural design of the buildings.
The two new plants will be using advanced technologies including application of Artificial Intelligence. The new plants will reduce the consumption of energy used in cooling processes through sustainable methodologies such as using treated sewage water and thermal energy storage systems. These plants will also be connected to Empower’s centralised Command Control Centre, which provides real-time information and overview about plant operations.
Since the beginning of 2018, Empower acquired several real estate, commercial and tourism projects in Dubai, including Al Barari project, Dubai Arena, the largest all-purpose destination for the world's most popular events and live shows, Cityland Mall, The Address Hotel Dubai, and Zabeel One project. By the end of 2017, the number of buildings using Empower’s district cooling services reached 1,000 buildings.
Empower currently operates over 1.34 Million RT, providing environmentally responsible district cooling services to large-scale real estate developments, such as Jumeirah Group, Jumeirah Beach Residence, Dubai International Financial Centre, Business Bay, Dubai Healthcare City, Jumeirah Lake Towers, Palm Jumeirah, Discovery Gardens, Ibn Battuta Mall, Dubai Design District and International Media Production Zone, among others.
