DCT Abu Dhabi, National Library Launch Back To School Programme 2018
(6 September 2018)

The Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi, DCT Abu Dhabi, and the National Library sector has announced the upcoming launch of its Back to School Programme 2018 for the emirate’s public libraries. Developed under the theme ‘Let’s be ready for a great year’, the programme aims to encourage children to read more during the academic school year and also introduce a range of activities and events that celebrate culture and heritage while endorsing education.

The programme, which will be introduced in Abu Dhabi libraries including Al Wathba Library, Al Marfa Library, Mazyad Library, Al Bahia Library and Khalifa Park Library, and Al Ain’s Zayed Central Library, will include a variety of programmes and activities from 16th September to 5th October for children of all ages.

Educational and cultural activities across the libraries will include a plant harvest session held in cooperation with the Family Development Foundation, story telling sessions, educational workshops on how to eat healthier and the best practices for exercising in the morning, and many more.

The Kalima Project will also be introducing book sales across major branches of Abu Dhabi Cooperative Society including Abu Dhabi Mall, Al Mina, and the Association's Asbar Centre in Makani Mall in Shawamkh offering a 40% discount on educational books and offered in more than 30 languages. The sales will be open from 1st September until 22nd September and accessible to all visitors.

Abdullah Majed Al Ali, Acting Executive Director of the National Library Sector, DCT Abu Dhabi, said, "Reading is at the core of education and we encourage children and the youth of the nation to develop healthier and consistent reading habits, especially during the academic year. The Back to School Programme 2018 was created to show that reading is not only about books but about learning different cultures, activities, and also nurturing better habits and practices that will encourage students in being more productive and empathetic citizens. We hope to see a positive outcome at the end of the programme with children across the country both enjoying and learning from the experiences we have planned."

Established in 1981, the National Library sector, as part of DCT Abu Dhabi, is one of the UAE’s largest knowledge repositories and a vital resource for intellectuals, scholars and scientists. The National Library is responsible for the establishment of regional, community, children’s and mobile libraries. It also acts as a publisher, translates the world's major literary works and promotes talented Emirati writers and researchers by publishing their books and academic works. The National Library also collects, preserves and displays ancient Arab and Islamic manuscripts, covering a variety of topics from literature and religion to science and the arts.

All activities are open to children of all ages and are free to attend. Walk-ins are welcome, and no registration is required.
