Dubai International Arbitration Centre organises training for young arbitrators

As part of their efforts to promote commercial arbitration in the Middle East region and to exchange expertise and knowledge in the area of alternative dispute resolution, the Dubai International Arbitration Centre (DIAC), an initiative of Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in cooperation with the Kuwait Bar Association, organised a training course entitled, The Role of Arbitration in Settling Disputes at the Millennium Plaza Hotel in Dubai.

The training session, which was attended by Kuwaiti lawyers who also benefited from the expertise of DIAC, focused on enhancing knowledge and experience of international commercial arbitration and its role in settling trade disputes in accordance 

with the Dubai International Arbitration Centre guidelines and procedures based on the UAE Civil Procedure Act No. 11 of 1992.

The training, held under the supervision of Dr. Habib Al Mulla, Chairman Board of Trustees, DIAC, and Prof. Dr Tarek Fouad Riad, Chairman of the DIAC Executive Committee, was conducted by Shaaban Raafat Abdellatif, Director, Legal Affairs, Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI), Ahmed Ibrahim, Partner, Fenwick Elliott LLP – Middle East, and Ahmed Al Mansouri, Managing Partner, Mansouri Arbitration, Egypt.

The training session covered overseeing of arbitral proceedings and commercial disputes, appointing arbitrators, choosing the venue for the arbitration and fixing the fees of arbitrators and mediators as well as the differences between different legal systems and benefits of alternative means of arbitration. 

It also included a case study whereby the participants got the opportunity to virtually play different roles in the process of commercial arbitration.

Dr. Habib Al Mulla said that the Dubai International Arbitration Centre is one of the world’s leading centres in the field of settling commercial disputes and has since its inception been highlighting the importance of arbitration in stimulating the business environment of Dubai and the region.

Dr. Al Mulla also said that DIAC follows global rules developed in accordance with the highest international standards and keeps pace with the latest changes taking place in dispute resolution applicable to various economic sectors.

He emphasised on the importance of raising awareness of the latest practices of settling commercial disputes efficiently and smoothly amongst young arbitrators in light of the training programme offering an ideal platform to promote the knowledge of international arbitration as an effective tool for settling trade disputes.

Prof. Dr Tarek Fouad Riad pointed out that the training session is part of the Dubai International Arbitration Centre’s efforts to promote the latest means of resolving trade disputes, including commercial arbitration and alternative means of resolving trade disputes thus showcasing the distinctive business environment of Dubai which protects the rights and duties of overseas companies as well as their FDIs.

At the conclusion of the training, Dr. Habib Al Mulla presented certificates to the participants while mementos were exchanged between DIAC and the Kuwait Bar Association.
