DEWA & Jalila Cultural Centre discuss ways to enhance a culture of innovation among the younger generation
(5 December 2016)

HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), received Dr Mona Al Bahar, Executive Director of Al Jalila Cultural Centre, at DEWA main office, to discuss the ways to enhance and instil a culture of innovation among the younger generation for the good of the country, its people, and its organisations. Khawla Al Mehairi, Vice President of Marketing & Corporate Communications at DEWA attended the meeting.

Al Jalila Cultural Centre is the first government centre specialised in educating children and motivating them to innovate and create. The centre was launched in 2014, in adherence with the directives of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. HRH Princess Haya bint Al Hussein, wife of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, is the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Al Jalila Culture Centre, which also includes a number of highly educated and esteemed Emirati nationals.

Al Tayer commended the centre’s efforts towards providing an environment capable of enriching the lives of children through research and innovation, while developing their capabilities through cultural activities with a focus on heritage and art. This allows children to work at their full potential, and develop their abilities, thus strengthening the concept of heritage within the UAE’s community of children, enhancing their levels of self-esteem, and creating a link between the culture of the UAE and the international community.

“We have learned from HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum that our heritage is a source of national pride in the UAE. HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum once observed that our rich heritage is deeply embedded on this good, generous land like an ever-growing date palm tree. DEWA supports organisations who work to harvest the foundations of Emirati identity. DEWA strives to enhance a sense of loyalty and belonging to the UAE. This is one of the key prerequisites for a unified society that has a consolidated identity based on a common religion, language, heritage, culture, and civilisation,” said Al Tayer.

“DEWA is keen on launching initiatives and programmes that enhance innovation and creativity among the children, while providing an educational platform for them to develop their skills in different fields. This helps in bringing up an educated and talented generation, capable of achieving ongoing development. DEWA realises the importance of investing in the youth, who are the leaders of the future. DEWA’s educational and cultural activities aim to involve the youth in research and instil a culture of teamwork. DEWA’s Engineers of the Future summer camp enables a culture of innovation and creativity among the youth, while providing an educational platform for children to develop their skills among fields including engineering, electricity, mechanics, science and mathematics. The camp also prepares the future generation of innovators, develops the capabilities of the youth, supports talent, and shares knowledge with the next generations,” added Al Tayer.

Al Tayer noted that DEWA was the first government organisation in the UAE to measure the happiness of children, reflecting the organisation’s deep desire to engage with younger generations, to ensure a brighter future.
