Dubai Chamber hosts Paraguayan, Costa Rican presidents in effort to boost trade ties
(17 January 2017)
H.E. Buamim: Dubai Chamber studying possibility of sending delegation to Paraguay, Costa Rica in the first half of 2017

Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry hosted two high-level delegations at its headquarters today, which were headed by H.E. Horacio Cartes, President of Paraguay, and H.E. Luis Guillermo Solís Rivera, President of Costa Rica.

The delegations were received by H.E. Hamad Buamim, President and CEO of Dubai Chamber, and H.E. Majid Al Shamsi, 1st Vice Chairman, in addition to other officials and department directors. The meetings primarily focused on strengthening economic cooperation and expanding the countries’ trade and cultural ties with Dubai and the UAE.

Addressing the delegations, H.E Buamim explained that Latin America is a region of a strategic importance for Dubai as well as a priority market under the Chamber’s expansion strategy. He also revealed that the Chamber is reviewing the possibility of sending a delegation to Paraguay and Costa Rica during the first half of 2017 in an effort to further explore new trade and investment opportunities in both markets.

On his part, H.E. Al Shamsi highlighted the importance of hosting the delegations as the meetings provided the right platform to build on progress achieved by the inaugural Global Business Forum on Latin America, which the Chamber hosted in Dubai last year. He explained that Paraguay can play a vital role in cooperating with Dubai on food security, adding that there is huge potential for both sides to collaboration in other sectors such as infrastructure, tourism, transport, logistics, real estate, and water.

H.E. Cartes called on Dubai Chamber to organise a trade mission to Paraguay in an effort to learn about the country’s business environment and explore new business opportunities. During the meeting, Gustavo Leite, Paraguay’s ministry of industry and trade, explained that Paraguay has set ambitious goals to become a regional hub for agriculture, manufacturing and logistics, adding that there is plenty of scope for increased cooperation in these sectors.

During the meeting with the Costa Rican delegation, Dubai Chamber’s 1st Vice Chairman highlighted the UAE’s strong relationship with Costa Rica, and explained that the country imports more than two-thirds of its aluminium from Dubai. He lauded Costa Rica’s successful efforts to diversify its economy beyond tourism and agriculture and build up in manufacturing and IT industries.

H.E. Solis emphasised Costa Rica’s commitment to enhancing its trade relations with the UAE and facilitate new partnerships, adding that the new agreement eliminating the need for UAE and Costa Rican citizens to obtain pre-entry visas will only strengthen bilateral relations in the future.
