The UAE chapter of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) recently held it 6th board meeting at Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s headquarters, where the board of directors addressed a number of important matters on its agenda.

During the meeting, H.E. Humaid Mohamed Ben Salem, Chairman, ICC-UAE Chapter, revealed that the United Nations General Assembly had recently granted Observer Status to the ICC, making it the first business organisation to be given this status.

H.E. Ben Salem said the decision reflects the important role played by businesses around the world in achieving the objectives of the UN and implementing the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In its new role, the ICC will contribute directly to the work of the UN General Assembly.

He spoke about ICC-UAE’s efforts to support the interests of the local business community and address challenges impacting companies in the country. As the world’s largest business organisation, the ICC represents more than 6 million members in over 100 countries.

In addition, H.E. Ben Salem lauded the UAE’s Year of Giving initiative for 2017, which was recently announced by H.H. Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE. He explained that the UAE is well-recognised for its charity and humanitarian work around the world, adding that the country’s private sectors stands to play an important role in expanding these efforts.

The ICC-UAE board approved the programme of action and budget for 2017, which included various objectives and activities that aim to enhance business support, dispute resolution, banking and trade facilitation services.

In addition, the secretariat was advised to hold the next election of the ICC–UAE commissions. The election of the ICC-UAE board of directors is set to take place in May 2017.

On his part, Mr. Hassan Al Hashemi, Secretary General of ICC-UAE, informed board members that the ICC decided to revise its Incoterms rules, adding that the new Incoterms would be announced in 2020.

Mr. Al Hashemi added that the ICC-UAE could build on its efforts by organising events and initiatives to support the interests of the country’s business community and highlight its role in forming global trade policies.

Established in 2004, the ICC-UAE Chapter represents the commercial, industrial and business enterprises in the country at a global level, and promotes the scope and reach of the UAE business community around the world.
