Dubai Culture Supports ’Year of Giving 2017’ with a Cultural Initiative
(7 March 2017)
The Authority donates books to 200 children in collaboration with Awqaf & Minors Affairs Foundation and The Family Village

Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), the Emirate’s dedicated entity for culture, arts and heritage, has demonstrated its support for the ‘Year of Giving 2017’ with a cultural initiative that donated books to 200 orphans. In collaboration with Awqaf & Minors Affairs Foundation, The Family Village and a number of publishing houses, the Authority distributed the gifts via its Dubai Public Library branches.

The initiative confirms Dubai Culture’s commitment to spreading knowledge and a love of reading across the community, and also saw the Authority adopting the charitable values and three pillars of the Year of Giving 2017 – collaboration within the private sector, giving back to the community in a spirit of volunteerism, and inspiring young children with a shining example of how to serve the nation.

Fahad Al Mamari, Director of Dubai Public Library at Dubai Culture, commented: “Dubai Culture is aligned with the government’s vision of establishing a giving society that takes pride in serving its people. This is demonstrated by our education and support orphans, which focuses on promoting reading and preparing the younger generation for careers that will contribute to shaping the future of our country.”

The Authority distributed books to 200 kids from the Awqaf & Minors Affairs Foundation and The Family Village, also organising story-telling sessions for orphans. The initiative was supported by Hamaleel Publishing, Sadikat Publishing, Dar Al HudHud and Dar Maraya.

Al Mamari added: “To achieve our government’s vision of establishing a knowledge-based economy, it is crucial that our youth appreciates reading and takes a joy in literature. By bringing books to children and encouraging a positive reading habit, Dubai Culture is supporting this vision and furthering the UAE Reading Strategy 2016-2026.”

The initiative took place during the UAE National Reading Month in March, which Dubai Public Library supports with a range of initiatives including the ‘Reading Box’, and by creating e-book platforms in collaboration with organisations like Dubai Airports. These combined efforts highlight Dubai Culture’s commitment to the over-arching Dubai Plan 2021.
