DEWA receives CERs certification from the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change
(5 April 2017)

In efforts to implement the directives of the wise leadership to reduce carbon emissions and support Dubai’s transformation into a green economy, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) received the Certified Emissions Reductions (CERs) certificate from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) for the successful offset of carbon emission during the 18th edition of Water, Energy, Environment Technology Exhibition (WETEX 2016).

This was achieved by trading carbon credits (CDMs) approved by DEWA’s projects based on the Kyoto Protocol of the UNFCCC. The exhibition’s carbon emissions were neutralised with carbon balances approved for the cooling of air ducts for gas turbines of the Jebel Ali L-Station. HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA, received the certificate from the UNCCC. Waleed Salman, Executive Vice President of Strategy and Business Development at DEWA was present at the event, in addition to a team from DEWA’s Sustainability and Climate Change Department.

"Our environmental strategy focuses on reducing carbon emissions based on the best integrated green practices at all levels of our operations to reduce the carbon footprint, in adherence with the directives of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to reduce carbon emissions and streamline our transition into a green economy. This supports the long-term ‘A Green Economy for Sustainable Development’ initiative, launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to develop a green economy in the UAE,” said Al Tayer.

“Successfully neutralising the carbon emissions of WETEX, and receiving this prestigious certification reflects DEWA’s commitment towards achieving sustainable development and the Dubai Carbon Abatement strategy, to reduce carbon emissions by 16% by 2021, in adherence with the Dubai Plan 2021, to transform Dubai into a smart and sustainable city with clean, healthy and sustainable environmental elements,” added Al Tayer.

Al Tayer noted that DEWA adopts the best international practices in all operations, projects and initiatives, to protect natural resources and ensure a brighter and more sustainable future for generations to come. This also supports DEWA’s efforts to provide the community with a clean, healthy, and safe environment, in adherence with the UAE Vision 2021, to make the UAE one of the best countries in the world by 2021.

The WETEX 2016 carbon offsetting initiative has been achieved based on the United Nations / The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) carbon emissions calculation. DEWA has recently received the Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) certificate for the cooling of air ducts for gas turbines at the Jebel Ali L-Station. The project achieved remarkable results and exceeded the initial targets by reducing 55,373 tonnes of carbon dioxide and 39,824 tonnes in equivalent greenhouse gases during 2013 and 2014.
