HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) received a high-level delegation from the Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority (GCCIA) Board of Directors, who visited the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park after the inauguration of its 2nd phase by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, on 20 March this year. The delegation viewed the solar park’s latest technologies and best international practices and activities, and discussed its strategic importance in promoting sustainable growth and increasing reliance on clean and renewable solar energy for a better future, for generations to come.
The GCCIA Board of Directors’ delegation included HE Dr Matar Al Neyadi, Chairman of the Board, Mohammed Juma Al Falasi, Vice Chairman and Managing Director, Ahmed Ali Al Ebrahim, CEO, Nasser Al Shahrani, Deputy Chief Operating Officer, Mohamed Al Sheikh, Chief Network Officer, Abdul Mohsen Al Musallami, Board Affairs Manager, Sheikh Nawaf bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, CEO of Bahrain Electricity and Water Authority, Essa Hillal Al Kuwari, President of KAHRAMAA of Qatar, Mohammed Hejji Boshehri, Undersecretary of the Kuwaiti Ministry of Electricity and Water, Ahmed Saleh Aljahdhami, CEO of Oman Power and Water Procurement Company, and other directors and board members.
HE Ahmed bin Buti Al Muhairbi, Secretary General of Dubai Supreme Council of Energy was also present. Mohammad Abdullah Abunayyan, Chairman of the Board of ACWA Power, and Abdul Hamid Al Muhaidib, CEO of Shuaa Energy, were also present. From DEWA, Waleed Salman, EVP of Strategy and Business Development, Dr Yousef Al Akraf, EVP of Human Resources and Business Support, and Khawla Al Meheiri, Vice President of Marketing & Corporate Communications, were also present.

DEWA derives its energy projects and initiatives from the inspiring vision of our wise leadership, which prioritises sustainability and the energy mix to ensure a better future, achieve the happiness of society and maintain a balance between growth and preserving the environment. The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park is the largest single-site solar park in the world based on the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model. It will generate 1,000MW by 2020 and 5,000MW by 2030, with total investments worth up to AED 50 billion. Upon completion, the solar park will reduce over 6.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually. It will achieve the goals of Dubai for sustainable development and a green economy,” said Al Tayer.
Al Tayer explained to the visiting delegation the details of the 200 megawatt (MW) 2nd phase of the solar park. The phase was implemented in partnership with the consortium led by ACWA Power from Saudi Arabia, the main developer, and Spain’s TSK, the main contractor, with an investment of AED 1.2 billion. The phase will generate clean energy for 50,000 residences in Dubai, and will reduce 214,000 tonnes of carbon emissions a year. This phase installed 2.3 million photovoltaic solar panels over 4.5 square kilometres, involving 1.5 million Safe Man Hours without Lost Time Injury.
“Our success in completing the 200MW 2nd phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park ahead of schedule is the result of the unlimited support of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The vision of His Highness is a beacon leading the way to the success and excellence of our efforts to achieve the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, to transform Dubai into an international hub for clean energy and green economy, generate 7% of Dubai’s total power output from clean energy by 2020, to 25% by 2030, and to 75% by 2050, and reduce carbon emissions by 16% by 2021,” continued Al Tayer.
