Dubai Culture Successfully Concludes Second Edition of its ’Reading Box’ Initiative
(9 May 2017)
More than 5,000 visits across 14-day initiative supporting the National Reading Strategy 2016-2026

Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), the Emirate’s dedicated entity for culture, arts and heritage, has successfully concluded the second edition of its ‘Reading Box’ initiative, which ran from 20 March to 1 April 2017 in City Walk Two. Over five thousand visitors attended a programme of 60 different activities, which aimed to promote healthy reading habits across all segments of society.

The second edition of the ‘Reading Box’ was held under the theme ‘A generation reads. A civilisation rises’, in support of the UAE’s National Reading Strategy and the National Month of Reading launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

Dr. Hissa bin Masood, Director of Studies and Research Centre at Dubai Culture, commented: “The second edition of our ‘Reading Box’ initiative saw unprecedented interest from the public, attracting a high number of adults and children from a variety of nationalities. The initiative fulfilled the government’s directives and supported the National Reading Strategy by promoting healthy reading habits across the whole community.”

This year’s ‘Reading Box’ included a variety of activities that aimed to spread happiness and positivity via a dedicated happiness programme. With a focus on children and youth, the initiative also hosted a book exhibition and workshops, as well as sessions that encouraged visitors of all ages to consider vital societal issues in the company of writers, poets, publishers, artists and other prominent community figures. Children from 15 different schools attended the activities and were also invited to a book signing session and an interactive reading session.

The second edition of the ‘Reading Box follows the successful first edition, which saw high participation from over 2,000 children and 1,157 adults, and was held in Dubai Mall from 11th to 24th October during the Year of Reading 2016. Visitors came from both private and public schools to participate in the initiative’s diverse activities and workshops.
