DEWA signs MOU with University of Dubai to provide 10 scholarships to Emirati students

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Dubai to provide 10 annual scholarships for Emirati students. The scholarships are for Bachelor’s Degrees in Information Systems Security, and in Electrical Engineering – specialising in Communications Engineering. This supports DEWA’s strategy to prepare Emiratis to lead the energy sector.

The MoU was signed at DEWA’s Head Office by HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, and Dr Eesa Bastaki, President of the University of Dubai.

"At DEWA, we support the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, that education and Emiratisation are two key priorities in the work of the government, and a national responsibility that calls for synergising and integrating all national initiatives for achieving the aspirations of the people of the UAE and ensuring their welfare and decent living. We have an integrated strategy for the Emiratisation of engineering jobs at DEWA. We develop skilled Emiratis to prepare the next generation to take the lead in energy and water. We do this through our scholarship programme for Emirati students at top universities in the UAE and abroad,” said Al Tayer.

“We are pleased to cooperate once again with the University of Dubai, which is a national university that offers highly-effective programmes. We already cooperate with the University of Dubai to provide training programmes that support and empower Emirati staff, develop their skills, and train them on best leadership practices, which is a part of the young leadership programme at DEWA. We believe that Emirati youth have the required capabilities to enable DEWA to realise its vision and ambitious plans, and contribute to transforming Dubai into the smartest and happiest city in the world. We always seek to discover and attract creative and talented people to DEWA. DEWA has achieved excellent results in Emiratisation, with UAE Nationals comprising 85.26% of senior management,” added Al Tayer.

Al Tayer noted that DEWA’s Emiratisation strategy includes ambitious programmes to train and prepare Emiratis for engineering and technical jobs. DEWA provides various scholarships to Emirati students who wish to further their studies in energy. This is part of DEWA’s strategy to develop a generation capable of leading the UAE’s water and energy sectors. DEWA provides its employees with state-of-the-art training programmes, to keep them up to date with the latest developments, and improve their skills and professional performance, which in turn benefits the UAE and its citizens.

“The University of Dubai is keen to sign academic agreements with established national organisations such as Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, to encourage and develop education in all disciplines, especially those related to engineering and Information Technology. The objective of the University of Dubai is to provide quality education, which is one of the goals of Emirati organisations who look for outstanding graduates to join their staff,” said Dr Bastaki.

“DEWA is working to reach the highest-possible level of Emiratisation in engineering and technical roles, especially after its success in the Emiratisation of many administrative and financial jobs. DEWA focuses on providing staff with the appropriate skills that meet work needs. We have many training programmes for Emirati students to complete their studies in the UAE and abroad, in mechanical and electrical engineering, and in renewable energy,” said Dr Yousef Al Akraf, Executive Vice President of Business Support and Human Resources at DEWA.
