DEWA launches ’Shams Dubai Calculator’ web application
(5 July 2017)

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has launched the ‘Shams Dubai Calculator’ web application, to help customers easily decide on the installation of photovoltaic (PV) panels on their rooftops under ‘Shams Dubai’ initiative, to generate electricity from solar power.

The Shams Dubai Calculator will provide customers with detailed comparisons and additional information conveniently and smoothly using innovative tools. This is part of DEWA’s efforts to support its ‘Shams Dubai’ initiative, and in line with its keenness to engage the people of Dubai in reducing the Emirate's carbon footprint.

“At DEWA, we work according to the vision of our wise leadership, which is a road map that guides our work, initiatives and projects aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of the UAE, and Dubai. This contributes positively and effectively to achieving the Smart Dubai initiative, launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to make Dubai the smartest and happiest city in the world and the Dubai Plan 2021, to establish Dubai as a sustainable city, whose environmental elements are clean, healthy and sustainable,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.

Al Tayer stated that the ‘Shams Dubai Calculator’ is an innovative service designed by DEWA for customers who desire to produce electricity from solar power under the Shams Dubai initiative. By providing their account numbers only, customers can easily identify their building’s locations and rooftops through an interactive map. They can measure the usable area, number of panels, and their total capacity on a monthly or annual basis. Using innovative interactive tools, the customer can map out specific areas without the need to calculate the whole rooftop usable area.

Al Tayer also noted that the interactive map helps the customer obtain a lot of information; such as the green charger locations, and other Shams Dubai projects within the customer’s neighbourhood. Results can also be shared through social media channels.

“DEWA is keen to contribute to achieving Dubai’s leadership, in all areas, through the provision of quality and innovative services, which translates an integrated strategy, developed by DEWA, to apply the best solutions, future technologies and advanced global programmes. This adheres to our leadership’s approach in adopting creativity and innovation to provide the best smart services with high quality and efficiency, through the optimal use of modern technologies and appropriate placement, to achieve people’s happiness,” added Al Tayer.

Al Tayer stressed that this step supports the Shams Dubai initiative to strengthen the culture of sustainability among consumers in Dubai, by encouraging them to adopt sustainable solutions and clean production of electricity, using solar energy, transforming them from consumers to producers, and increasing their reliance on natural resources. It also maintains a healthy and clean environment to ensure a sustainable future for generations to come, in support of DEWA’s relentless efforts to achieve Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, which aims to provide 75% of Dubai's energy from clean sources by 2050.

Al Tayer pointed out that the service contributes significantly to encouraging customers to install solar panels to generate clean electricity and achieve financial savings through low electricity bills, as well as increase the value of the property. In addition, it contributes to reducing carbon emissions and preserving the environment through clean energy production, hence, supporting Dubai's economy, and ensuring a sustainable future for the Emirate.

Interested consumers can check the calculator on DEWA’s official website. DEWA also provides the information and conditions required for the installation of solar panels on the roofs of buildings, in addition to the names of contractors and consultants accredited for the installation of PV panels, through its website: www.dewa.gov.ae/shamscalc
