A senior Singaporean delegation, representing the Smart Nation and Digital Government Office (SNDGO) and the Government Technology Agency of Singapore (GovTech), visited the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park. The solar park, which is being built by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), is the is the largest single-site solar park in the world. The total capacity of the solar park will reach 5,000MW by 2030, with total investments of AED 50 billion.
The delegation was headed by Ng Chee Khern, Permanent Secretary of SNDGO, in Singapore, and Jaqueline Poh, Chief Executive and GovTech, HE Cheong Ming Foong, Consul General of the Consulate of Singapore in Dubai, and several government officials from the Information and Media Development Authority and the Ministry of Communications in Singapore.
HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, stressed the importance of such visits, to enhance cooperation with international institutions, and allow DEWA to review its most important programmes, projects and initiatives to promote sustainability and green economy in Dubai. This also promotes the establishment of an infrastructure for electricity and water services in Dubai, in accordance with the highest standards and best global practices.
“The launch of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park supports the vision of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to promote sustainability and transform Dubai into a global hub for clean energy and green economy, through the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, so that 7% of Dubai’s total power output will come from clean energy by 2020, 25% by 2030 and 75% by 2050. Upon completion, the solar park will contribute to the reduction of over 6.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually, supporting Dubai's objectives to promote sustainable development and a green economy,” said Al Tayer
The delegation received detailed explanations of Dubai's unique experience in developing the renewable and alternative energy sector, preserving natural resources, and finding alternative solutions to traditional energy for sustainable development in the Emirate.
DEWA launched a series of ambitious programmes, projects, and initiatives, which support the Dubai Plan 2021. Dubai Plan 2021 has developed a roadmap that includes initiatives and development projects that combine economic growth with sustainable energy and a clean and secure environment, to make Dubai a smart, sustainable and integrated city that has sustainable resources, and provides a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment to achieve green growth, and enhance energy efficiency.
The delegation was briefed on the Shams Dubai initiative, which allows building owners to install photovoltaic panels on the rooftops of buildings, to produce electricity from solar power. The energy is produced locally, and any surplus is then exported to DEWA’s grid.
