Etihad Energy Services Company (Etihad ESCO), a company owned by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), signed an agreement with Dubai Airports for the retrofitting of Terminals 1, 2 and 3 of Dubai International Airport (DXB) and the Dubai International Airport Hotel at Concourse B.
The contract was signed by HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of Dubai Supreme Council of Energy and MD & CEO of DEWA, and HE Jamal Al-Hai, Deputy CEO of Dubai Airports, on the first day of the 19th Water, Energy, Technology, and Environment Exhibition (WETEX).
According to the agreement, Etihad ESCO will offer the best practices that save electricity and water, as well as provide photovoltaic solutions. The new contract is expected to boost energy efficiency at Dubai International Airport and help Dubai Airports save up to 20% in energy consumption annually.
“The agreement supports the Dubai Side Management Strategy 2030 to reduce electricity and water demand by 30% by 2030. These are being done with programmes such as green-building regulations, retrofitting of existing buildings, district cooling, wastewater reuse, laws and standards to raise efficiency, energy-efficient street-lighting, and the Shams Dubai initiative to enable building owners to install photovoltaic panels on rooftops to generate electricity from solar power. We are pleased to cooperate with Dubai Airports in this strategic project, in line with our objective to reduce carbon emissions,” said Al Tayer.
Al Tayer noted that Etihad ESCO, which was launched by DEWA, provides investment opportunities to companies that specialise in energy efficiency. Etihad ESCO is currently retrofitting over 30,000 buildings in the Emirate in the first phase of the project, to ensure energy efficiency and manage energy demand.
“At Dubai Airports, we embrace the concept of sustainability in all our operations. Our partnership with Etihad ESCO will contribute significantly to enhancing environmental sustainability. Our goal is to optimise the use of renewable energy and this is a step towards achieving that goal and achieving a green future,” said Al Hai.
Dubai Airports has implemented several green initiatives to enhance energy efficiency. These initiatives include the installation of solar panels that significantly reduce energy consumption at Dubai International and Dubai World Central, through solar power generation.
