RTA Runs Supreme Initiatives In Celebration Of ’Reading Month’
(11 March 2018)
The event conforms to the state policy

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has launched a series of refined initiatives and events in celebration of this March; designated as the Reading Month. The step, which concurs with the national policy charted for the next decade, aims to make reading a key component of the business of government departments. As such, it forms an integral part of RTA’s efforts to keep pace with the national policy.

Yousef Al Rida, CEO of Corporate Administrative Support Services Sector, RTA, said, “The strategy mapped out by the RTA to support the UAE initiative designating March as the Month of Reading targets this year all community segments. An array of unique initiatives are being held including tasking some of RTA leaders to start 2-month tuition for 20 children of limited income earners, who have not joined schools. Each volunteering staff will allocate one hour for reading a book. The selection of children has been coordinated with Rawafed Center for Development and Education, and the Red Crescent.

“The planned visit of RTA delegation to Tanzania and Uganda is part of the Global Community Initiatives Plan. During the visit, Salama magazine and educative materials will be distributed to 400 children in both countries in celebration of the Reading Month,” explained Al Rida.

“Events included providing specialist books about roads, public transport and sustainability to several university libraries, and supporting the 10th Emirates Airline Festival of Literature launched this month through deploying buses to commute guests comprising top global writers and authors.

“In RTA Head Office, a fair was held for second-hand books offered at nominal prices to RTA employees and visitors and the proceeds will then be donated to the School Bag project in collaboration with charitable bodies in Dubai.

“Events held also included Reading Café; comprising reading contests for RTA employees challenging their skill to recap some books in RTA Library. A Reading Corner will be held where reading advisors from RTA sectors and agencies will communicate with employees and furnish them with titles of books they have read, and recommend them to colleagues to enrich their knowledge,” commented Al Rida.

“There will also be a Short Story contest; which had been launched before, with its current edition designated to people of determination. The initiative is the first of its kind developed by the RTA in support of this category. The RTA is continuing with its project of issuing audio books for people of determination.

“The RTA spares no efforts to support the policy & initiatives of the UAE and Dubai encouraging and raising the profile of reading as an urban tool for leveraging the development of the community. Reading also nurtures educated generations capable of leading this development drive,” concluded the CEO of Corporate Administrative Support Services Sector, RTA.
