The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced that it would activate the enforcement of fines on violators of Phase II of Dedicated Bus Lanes on Al Ghubaiba and Al Mamzar Roads, following the expiry of a one-month trial run offered to motorists on 31st October 2016. A fine of AED600 will be slapped on violators. Private motorists have been offered a one-month’s trial period during which 8439 awareness offences had been reported but not registered, thus involving no financial penalties.
Adel Shakri, Director of Transportation Systems, RTA Public Transport Agency, “We were keen to alert private motorists using the dedicated bus lanes on Al Mamzar and Al Ghubaiba Roads before issuing them with fines. We had given them a period of one month starting from 30th September and ending on 31st October during which awareness offences have been issued without financial penalties, to make them aware of the law set to be enforced from tomorrow 1st November. An AED600 fine will be issued to offenders through surveillance cameras or manually by police patrols. Should the driver incur two offences for the same occurrence, only one fine would be accounted for.
“To ensure the smooth flow of other vehicles, the RTA has allocated a 20-meter Grace Distance nearby exits, turns, and loading/drop off areas to enable those motorists turn towards the exit. Order No (1) for 2010 regarding the use of dedicated lanes in the Emirate of Dubai has specified vehicles allowed to use dedicated lanes namely: Public buses, Taxis, Dubai Police vehicles, Civil Defence vehicles, and Ambulance vehicles on duty. Other private vehicles will only be allowed to use the dedicated lane when entering or exiting subsidiary roads,” explained Shakri.
“The ultimate objective of implementing the dedicated bus & taxi lane system (Al Masar) is to raise the share of public transit modes in the mobility of people in Dubai, reduce traffic congestions and improve the on-time arrival of public buses & taxis. The system also aims to contribute to reducing the direct & indirect operational costs of transport means, and curbing carbon emissions polluting the environment,” added the Director of Transportation Systems, RTA Public Transport Agency.
