Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) organised the DEWA Hackathon – Expo 2020, under the theme ‘Together to support Expo’s 2020’ themes. The Hackathon supports national strategies and goals to promote creativity and innovation, DEWA’s vision to become a sustainable innovative world-class utility, and its efforts to support Expo 2020 Dubai. A total of 55 employees from various sectors took part in the Hackathon. The two-day event, which was held at Marriot hotel Al Jaddaf, Dubai, focused on international innovation trends, innovation tools, generating creative ideas, transforming challenges into opportunities, and motivating participants to come up with innovative ideas and solutions that support the three sub themes of Expo 2020 Dubai: Opportunity, Mobility, and Sustainability.
Through its initiatives and programmes, DEWA supports the National Innovation Strategy, which was launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to make the UAE one of the most innovative countries in the world, and the Dubai Innovation Strategy, which was approved by HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council of Dubai, to make Dubai the most innovative city in the world. Innovation represents 40% of DEWA’s strategic plan for 2021, which DEWA recognises as a key pillar for ongoing development.
The Hackathon – Expo 2020 supports DEWA’s strategy to promote innovation and encourage innovators. It is an important platform to engage DEWA’s staff in developing creative ideas and transforming them into smart applications, initiatives, and projects that enhance DEWA’s efforts to support the three sub themes of Expo 2020 Dubai. DEWA will study the possibility of transforming the innovative ideas presented by employees, into projects that support the sustainable development of Dubai, and contribute to achieving the Smart Dubai initiative to transform Dubai into the smartest and happiest city in the world.
