RTA honours supporters in completing Dubai Water Canal Project
(9 December 2016)

HE Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), has honoured a host of RTA strategic partners among authorities & departments of Dubai Government as well as media organizations, contractors and consultants in recognition of their effective role & cooperation in accomplishing the Dubai Water Canal Project. He also felicitated RTA employees who were part of this achievement.

HE Major General Abdurrahman Mohammed Rafee, Assistant Commander-in-chief for Community Happiness & Logistics at Dubai Police, attended the ceremony, which was held at Al Wasl Auditorium. Attendees also included top officials of government departments, organizations & businesses and CEOs of the RTA.

Al Tayer extended thanks and appreciation to all entities that took part in the timely accomplishment of the Canal project, turning yesterday’s dream into a nice reality. The Canal has redefined the Dubai Map and added a touch of beauty & an urban dimension to Dubai city.

“The Dubai Water Canal has been admired by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President, Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, who made a tweet following the launch of the Canal in which HH was thankful to the teams of the RTA, Dubai Holding, Meraas and Meydan. In that post HH said, “The trust we repose in you is grows every day.”

“The Dubai Water Canal, the latest addition to tourist & development destination in Dubai, has realized a long-standing dream of the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum to deepen the Dubai Creek in 1959. HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has now complemented this drive by linking the Creek with the Arabian Gulf through the Dubai Water Canal and the Business Bay Canal extending 12 km,” explained Al Tayer.

“The RTA has succeeded in overcoming several challenges encountered during the construction phases of the Dubai Water Canal. For instance, the RTA has to coordinate with 4 main contractors and 60 sub-contractors, and cope with the complexity of undertaking a project of such a scale within a populated area. It has also got to construct bridges on key traffic corridors in the Emirate without disrupting the traffic flow as well as designing & constructing detours on the Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Wasl Road and Jumeirah Road at the highest safety standards to enable digging the Canal and constructing the bridges. It was also faced with the challenge of shifting key utility lines (sewage, water and electricity) without impacting areas served, and pumping water in the Canal in a way that ensures the safety of marine and wildlife at the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary and other parts of the Canal,” he elaborated.

Al Tayer then honoured heads and representatives of government entities, media organizations, companies and RTA team overseeing the project.
