RTA Holds Six External Workshops To Promote DAST Nationwide

The Higher Organising Committee of the Dubai Award for Sustainable Transport (DAST) at the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has held five workshops in the Ministry of Community Development (targeting people of determination), Masdar city in Abu Dhabi, and the Institute of Applied Technology in Dubai (targeting schools). Workshops also included one in Al Ain Municipality, media workshop held by the Organising Committee, and a sixth workshop will be held for universities with the start of the new academic year in September as part of efforts to promote the Award. 

Abdul Rahman Al Janahi, Secretary General of DAST cum Director of Building and Facilities at RTA said, “A visual presentation was made to showcase the objectives, categories, assessment criteria, prizes, conditions, and provisions for registration in the Award. It also explained the procedures of online participation in the Award (www.rta.ae/dast) and e-mail inquiries. The deadline for submissions is 15 October 2017 and communication should be through the e-mail (info.dast@rta.ae).

The purpose of holding these workshops was to exchange information and views and make constructive comments to develop valuable ideas capable of enriching the concept & objectives of the Award. Such inputs are bound to offer best solutions and practices to improve the sustainable transport not only in Dubai but also all over the UAE. The underlying objective of inviting a host of public, semi-public entities, private companies, and managements of universities and schools all over the UAE is to discuss issues & topics of common interest. These gatherings would come up with the best findings for broadening and enhancing contributions to the 10th edition of DAST.

“Through the launching of this Award, RTA intends to hit several targets that include educating & encouraging individuals and social organisations to play an active role in realising RTA’s efforts to improve the public transport infrastructure & means. It also seeks to highlight the leading role of RTA in bolstering the partnership & cooperation between various entities & strategic partners in the fields of transport, safety and conserving the environment. Objectives also include highlighting the importance of sustainable transport to rank it as a key concern of various organisations, besides raising the awareness, sense of responsibility and the initiative spirit of various community segments particularly firms and establishments. They also include fostering successful initiatives in the fields of mobility, safety and environment besides promoting them across the business community, in addition to motivating the spirits of creativity & leadership in a host of mobility aspects to maximise the benefit of all parties,” continued.

DAST categories consist of two key divisions: Main Categories and Special Categories. Main categories comprise four awards; the first is Mobility Management, which focuses on applied practices & initiatives that contribute to raising the efficiency of using various types of mass transit systems. The second is Mobility Safety, which is concerned with practices & initiatives that contribute to raising the security & safety levels of riders of various transit means. The third is Environmental Conservation, which is devoted to any practice or initiative capable of reducing the negative impact of transit systems on the environment. The fourth is People of Determination Initiatives, which contribute directly or indirectly to easing the mobility of the disabled. 

The special categories comprise four awards as well; the first is the Best Academic Research for academicians submitting the best research on sustainable transport. The second is the Best Student Project that relates to the best student project in the field of sustainable transport across the UAE in the field of sustainable transport. The third is the Best Reporter that targets members of media who made the best media coverage of sustainable transport nationwide. The fourth award is the Best Media Team that aims at identifying the best media team that has made the best coverage of sustainable transport across the nation.
