Innovators from across the region will be presenting breakthrough ideas tackling a range of global challenges as they compete in the ‘Falling Walls Lab Dubai’ innovation challenge, hosted by Canadian University Dubai (CUD) on Sunday, September 30, at its campus in Dubai.
The event will see 12 shortlisted finalists showcase inventions that originated in this region and are aimed at tackling international concerns such as cybersecurity, nanotechnology, energy conservation and poverty alleviation.
Each participant will deliver a three-minute presentation on their project idea to a panel of judges comprising Mr. Essa Alzaabi, Director, Entrepreneurship Department, Start Up Hub, Dubai Chamber; Ms. Andrae Owuh, MD, Start Up Grind, Dubai; Mr. Carlos Guevara, Partner, Sia Partners; and Hanane Benkhallouk, Co-Founder and Executive Director, Sustain Leadership.
The winner of the Dubai Lab will go to the global final of the Falling Walls Lab innovation challenge to be hosted on November 8 in Berlin, presenting the project to an audience of over 600 top international experts, including delegates from prestigious institutions such as Harvard and MIT.
The Falling Walls Lab was created in 2014 as an initiative of the Falling Walls Foundation, a unique international platform established to mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall. It is a global innovation challenge that aims to identify ground-breaking ideas and nurture high potential talent.
The challenge attracted over 30 high quality applications to the Falling Walls Lab Dubai, from both within the UAE and overseas, including countries such as India, Jordan, Pakistan and Iran.
Commenting on the challenge, organizer and Incubator Coordinator at CUD, Elisabetta Lampedecchia, said, “We have been impressed by the quality and diversity of the applications we have received, this being the inaugural year of Falling Walls Lab Dubai. This demonstrates how academia, researchers, innovators and private enterprises are working together to foster innovation in the region.
“The 12 shortlisted projects are those that are genuinely capable of improving quality of life on an international scale and we look forward to seeing the successful candidate representing the UAE on a global stage.”
The Falling Walls Lab Dubai innovation presentations will take place from 10am on Sunday, September 30 in CUD’s Red Theatre auditorium.
