Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) organised various activities to celebrate World Environment Day 2018, organised this year under the theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’. The campaign urges governments, industry, communities, and individuals to explore sustainable alternatives and reduce the production and excessive use of single-use plastic, which damages marine life and threatens human health. Observing World Environment Day is part of DEWA’s efforts to promote a culture of sustainability, spread environmental awareness, and encourage society members to adopt a committed and responsible lifestyle towards protecting the environment.
Activities organised by DEWA included an awareness lecture at Al Rashidiya Majlis in Dubai, in cooperation with the Community Development Authority. It targeted the Majlis’ guests and residents of Al Rashidiya. DEWA also organised a lecture and a workshop at the School of Research Science in Dubai to encourage students to adopt environmentally-friendly behaviour to protect natural resources. It also had a booth at Arabian Centre where DEWA’s climate change ambassadors held awareness sessions about climate change, sustainability, global warming and protecting the environment. DEWA’s Conservation Team also informed the mall’s visitors about the steps they can take to contribute to protecting the environment by using electricity and water sensibly, and leading a sustainable lifestyle. DEWA also held internal activities for its staff and customers to raise awareness about the importance of protecting natural resources.
“This year’s World Environment Day is special as we celebrate it during the Holy Month of Ramadan, which urges us to not over spend and to reduce waste. It is also significant that we celebrate the day during the Year of Zayed, which celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of the leader of sustainability, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan who gave special importance to the environment and its protection. DEWA’s activities on World Environment Day are part of its corporate social responsibility and its role to promote awareness about protecting the environment in line with the UAE Vision 2021 and the Dubai Plan 2021 to make Dubai a smart and sustainable city whose environmental elements are clean, healthy and sustainable. It is supports DEWA’s vision to become a sustainable innovative world-class utility and our efforts to make sustainability a lifestyle to ensure a brighter future for generations to come,” said HE Saeed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.
“World Environment Day is an occasion to reflect on our responsibility towards protecting Planet Earth by using natural resources sensibly and contributing to achieving sustainability and combating climate change. We cooperate with different local, regional and international organisations to strengthen efforts to protect the environment and conserve its natural resources. Environmental work requires collective efforts to achieve a balance between development and protecting the environment, so the next generations can enjoy clean, healthy and safe environment,” added Al Tayer.
DEWA is one of the pioneers in setting up environmental programmes and initiatives. DEWA’s ongoing efforts have contributed to its receiving the Five Star Environmental Audit from the British Safety Council for sixth year running. DEWA’s excellent performance also led to its receiving the Globe of Honour for environment for the first time in the Middle East and North Africa, one of only seven countries around the world to do so. This prestigious award by the British Safety Council is an international recognition of DEWA’s successful approach to its environmental strategies and policies, included within its Integrated Management System, to achieve sustainability and protect the environment.
