In the presence of HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Supreme Council of Energy in Dubai, HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) announced unprecedented results from the 12th Conservation Award (2017-2018). The ceremony was also attended by HE Hussain bin Ibrahim Al Hammadi, Minister of Education, and HE Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment. The results include savings of 92GWh of electricity and over 133 million gallons of water, and reducing 43,000 tonnes of carbon emissions, equivalent to financial savings of about AED 46 million.
This was in recognition of the winners of the twelfth Conservation Award, organised by DEWA, in partnership with the Ministry of Education and the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) in Dubai. The ceremony was held at Palazzo Versace Hotel, in Dubai. It was attended by HE Dr Abdullah Al Karam, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Directors of KHDA, a number of senior officials from several government departments of Dubai, senior DEWA and KHDA officials, faculty members, heads, and students from educational institutions in Dubai.
“I am pleased to welcome you to the annual awards ceremony to honour the winners of the 12th Conservation Awards for the 2017-2018 academic year. The ceremony is organised by DEWA in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) in Dubai to celebrate the achievements of the education sector in rationalising their consumption of electricity and water and the preservation of environmental and natural resources. The Conservation Award coincides with the celebrations of the Year of Zayed in the UAE. On this occasion we recall the role of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may his soul rest in peace, who laid the foundations for sustainable development and environmental protection in the UAE. Guided by his vision, our wise leadership continues his legacy to achieve a balance between development and environment. This is one of the cornerstones of the UAE Centennial 2071, launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai: a long-term government plan to prepare the UAE and young Emiratis for the future. They are the future leaders and the main pillar of the process of comprehensive sustainable development,” said Al Tayer.
“Under the theme, ‘Together for a Sustainable Future,’ today we honour the winners of the 12th Conservation Award: the academic institutions that applied best practices in rationalising electricity and water consumption, as well as individual achievements within the education sector. DEWA adopts an integrated strategy to raise awareness of the importance of rationalising electricity and water consumption and engaging all customers and community members. DEWA launches throughout the year a full range of innovative initiatives, programmes and awareness activities for the residential, commercial, and industrial and government organisations, to encourage all segments of society to adopt positive behaviour and adopt a conscious and responsible lifestyle for electricity and water consumption, which supports our efforts to protect the environment and reduce our carbon footprint. Thanks to our strong partnership with the Ministry of Education and the Knowledge and the KHDA over the past 12 years, the awards has achieved a remarkable success. Together, we achieved impressive results year after year. During this award for 2017-2018, the participating educational establishments achieved unprecedented results in rationalising consumption, manifested in the provision of 92 GWh of electricity and over 133 million gallons of water. This has helped reduce over 43,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, equivalent to financial savings estimated at about AED 46 million,” added Al Tayer.
“Our youth are establishing a culture of rationalising and promoting sustainable development. This year's Conservation Award recognises the teams participating in the Carbon Ambassadors programme, which we launched with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and in cooperation with the Dubai Carbon Centre of Excellence. The programme empowers young people and involves them in low carbon development goals. It includes many phases and activities to instil sustainable development among university graduates and employees, and increase their scientific and operational awareness about various environmental issues, particularly climate change and its environmental and economic impact on our nation, our region and our planet. I would like to extend my thanks and appreciation to the Ministry of Education, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority and the educational institutions participating in the Conservation Award. I would like to pay tribute to the role of teachers, administrators and students and all those who contributed to the success of this year’s competition, inviting everyone to be part of the collective effort to establish environmental awareness in the community and achieve more results in the future in rationalising electricity and water consumption in Dubai. I wish you, our next generation, a brighter and more sustainable future,” concluded Al Tayer.
