HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) received a high-level delegation from Belgian company CMI Solar, led by Jean-Michel Gheeraerdts, President of CMI Energy Group, accompanied by Eric Absil, President of CMI Solar, Michel Lalemand, Vice President of CMI Solar, Thomas Bauthier, Projects Manager, and Christophe Corteil, Projects Developer. The meeting was attended by Waleed Salman, Executive Vice President of Business Development and Excellence at DEWA, and Dr Yousef Al Akraf, Executive Vice President of Business Support and Human Resources at DEWA.
The visit built closer ties between DEWA and CMI Solar and promote knowledge-sharing and best practices in renewable energy, and showing DEWA’s expertise in delivering electricity and water to the highest standards of availability, reliability and efficiency.
Al Tayer welcomed the delegation and talked about the importance of mutual cooperation in electricity and water. He discussed DEWA’s plans and projects to realise the vision of the wise leadership of the UAE and upgrade the services provided to customers. He noted that DEWA’s strategy is in-line with the UAE Centennial 2071, UAE Vision 2021 and Dubai Plan 2021 to ensure a sustainable, happy future and support the UAE’s aim to become first in all everything.
Al Tayer talked about how DEWA is working to diversify energy resources to include clean energy to provide 7% of Dubai’s total power output from clean energy by 2020, 25% by 2030 and 75% by 2050. DEWA launched many projects and initiatives to serve this purpose, including the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the largest of its kind in the world on a single site. It will generate 5,000 MW by 2030.
The MD & CEO explained that DEWA has become a leader in managing projects that are based on the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model. There are a number of socio-economic advantages to the IPP model which enabled DEWA to achieve world-class results and set a new global standard by achieving world records in solar power prices (USD 5.6 cents per kW/hr for the second phase of the solar park with a total capacity of 200 MW in 2015, and USD 2.99 cents per kW/hr in the third phase to generate 800 MW in 2016, and USD 7.3 cents per KW/hr for the fourth phase with Concentrated Solar Power technology and a capacity of 700MW, which is the lowest price in the world based on the IPP model.
The Belgian delegation praised the efforts of DEWA in renewable and clean energy and expressed its intent to enhance cooperation to increase mutual trade and investment opportunities as well as promote the best possible relations.
