The government has allocated more than AED18 million to honour top achieving sportsmen for 2017, Ibrahim Abdul Malik, Secretary-General of Youth and Sports Authority, YSA, announced during a press conference today.
"A total of 541 honourees from 28 sports associations including 430 athletes, 26 coaches, 79 administrators, four referees and two technical staff will be recognised for winning 450 medals - 261 gold, 154 silver and 125 bronze - in regional and international championships during a grand ceremony at the Emirates Palace next Sunday,'' he stated.
Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance, and former chairman of General Authority of Youth and Sports Welfare will be honoured as UAE Sports Personality of the Year.
''While at helm of the General Authority of Youth and Sports Welfare, many successes and achievements have been made and titles have been won,'' Ibrahim Abdul Malik added.
He noted that the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation was the top achievers, harvesting 28 international medals and the UAE Disabled Sports Federation will receive the highest value of the grant at more than AED2 million.
Yousif Mirza of the UAE Cycling Federation got the most valuable grant of AED486,000.
''From 2005 to 2017, 3534 medals were won and 4788 athletes were honoured UAE at a total value of AED 189 million,'' he added.
