DEWA Briefs Hong Kong Urban Planning Department Delegation On Best Practices
(6 April 2018)

HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), welcomed a high-level delegation from the Urban Planning Department of Hong Kong. The delegation included Chan Wai-shun, Assistant Director of Planning for New Territories, and Chau Yat-cheung, Chief Town Planner for Studies and Research, and other senior officials.

The meeting was attended by Waleed Salman, Executive Vice President of Business Development & Excellence; Dr Yousef Al Akraf, Executive Vice President of Business Support and Human Resources; Khawla Al Mehairi, Executive Vice President of Strategy & Government Communications, and Yousef Jebril, Executive Vice President of Power, Water & Planning. The meeting heightened cooperation between the two organisations, to review world-class practices and expertise at DEWA, including benchmarking and key performance indicators. DEWA is working to deliver the best possible services in electricity and water that are reliable, efficient, and always available, to achieve the happiness of its customers and stakeholders.

Al Tayer welcomed the visiting delegation, explaining the importance of continued cooperation between the two organisations in electricity and water. He reviewed DEWA’s programmes, plans, and projects to achieve the vision of the wise leadership, to strengthen the leadership of the UAE globally.

Al Tayer explained that DEWA has a holistic view of the energy sector and is managing energy security, sustainability, efficiency and the conservation of energy resources. These goals give a fully-integrated sustainable business strategy clearly outlined in the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050. DEWA is securing its energy supply by diversifying the energy mix, to include clean energy to provide 7% of Dubai’s total power output from clean energy by 2020, 25% by 2030 and 75% by 2050. DEWA has launched several projects and initiatives to achieve this objective, such as the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the largest single-site solar park in the world based on the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model. It will generate 5,000MW by 2030.

DEWA strives to achieve the Demand Side Management Strategy to reduce energy and water use by 30% by 2030. DEWA has established a demand side management company, Etihad ESCO, to support the improvement of energy efficiency in over 30,000 existing buildings in Dubai by retrofitting. Dubai adopts district cooling, which contributes significantly to low energy consumption and reduces carbon emissions.

Al Tayer noted that DEWA divides water desalination from electricity production as well as desalination using solar power, and works to establish a smart network that is a key component of its strategy to develop an advanced infrastructure to support Dubai's efforts to become a smart and happy city. DEWA launched three smart initiatives: Shams Dubai, to encourage home and building owners to install photovoltaic solar panels on rooftops to produce energy and connect it to DEWA’s grid; Smart Applications through Smart Meters and Grids, and Green Charger to establish the infrastructure for electric vehicle charging stations. DEWA also decided to reshape the concept of utilities and create a new digital future for Dubai by launching Digital DEWA, the digital arm of DEWA.

DEWA will implement a pioneering new model for utilities that uses innovation in renewable energy, energy storage, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital services. Digital DEWA is working on expanding its digital services through DEWA’s data hub subsidiary, Data Hub Integrated Solutions LLC (MORO), to store data and manage digital services. The services also include providing cloud computing, multiple high-quality solutions, and enhancing customer experience.

The delegation complimented DEWA’s efforts and its distinguished role, and thanked Al Tayer for his hospitality and the opportunity for both parties to discuss opportunities for enhancing cooperation.
