Dr. Abdullah bin Mohammed Belhaif Al Nuaimi, Minister of Infrastructure Development, on Sunday inaugurated the 1st edition of the Global Infrastructure Congress, GIC, with Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al-Zeyoudi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, Omar bin Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Sheikh Talal Al-khaled Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, CEO of Kuwait Oil Tanker Company, and Muaeen Abd Almalik, Yemen's Minister of Public Works and Roads, and a number of ambassadors and councils accredited to the UAE, in attendance.
The conference-cum-exhibition is attended by more than 1,000 prominent global personalities, besides experts from over 20 countries currently working in a number of mega infrastructure projects in the region. Agendas cover roads, bridges and highways, port and marine infrastructure, housing and urban development, and stormwater and wastewater with one shared exhibition hosting 70+ of the most cutting-edge solution providers.
Noting that infrastructure is the focal point of the comprehensive development underway in the UAE, Al Nuaimi said, "They are one of the main pillars of our national economy, trade and social integration."
The ministry and its local and federal partners are working on developing the country's infrastructure in line with a unified and comprehensive masterplan. The ultimate objective is placing the UAE as the best country in all areas worldwide by 2021 and 2071, the year of the UAE centennial, he added.
The fourth ranking among countries with the best infrastructure in 2017 and the plan to be on the top by 2021 poses serious challenges that require more coordination in our efforts to come up with clear-cut plans based on the aspirations of our visionary leadership, he said.
The minister also unveiled the formation of the UAE unified team for road quality comprising members from competent federal and local bodies. He also attended the team's first meeting on the sidelines of the event.
Recognising the best ideas, initiatives, projects and solutions that enable and showcase future-ready and sustainable infrastructure, the GIC awards are to be presented by the minister at the closing ceremony of the two-day event.
