Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) and the UAE Water Aid Foundation (Suqia), under the umbrella of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives (MBRGI), organised an awareness programme for elementary and middle schools in Dubai, in cooperation with Surge Middle East. The programme raises awareness on the global water crisis, water scarcity, and sustainability. Since its launch in October 2017, the programme has included interactive and educational activities in many schools in Dubai, with the participation of over 1,400 students and approximately 60 volunteer trainers from DEWA. This is part of DEWA’s efforts to educate future generations about the global water crisis and water scarcity, as well as teach youth about sustainability, and rationalisation of resources.
The programme includes a virtual trip around the world to identify the problem of water scarcity and the challenges facing millions of people around the world to obtain clean water. It focuses on the concepts of equal distribution of water in different countries, water footprint, sustainability, and rationalisation of resources.
“In line with the vision of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, who realises the importance of investing in the youth as future leaders, DEWA is committed to involve and inform them in educational activities about global, environmental, social and sustainability issues, as well as rationalisation of natural resources, especially water. We strive to highlight the issue of water scarcity around the world, and how we can contribute to solving it, and work for a better future for the entire human race. The programme aims to spread awareness, among future generations, on Dubai’s efforts in water scarcity and conservation. It also supports the Demand Side Management Strategy that aims to reduce power and water consumption by 30% by 2030,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Suqia.
“DEWA encourages community members to rationalise energy and water consumption by launching several awareness and educational programmes and innovative initiatives throughout the year. This helps us promote rational consumption concepts, and provide the community with information and tips on how to conserve natural resources and protect the environment,” concluded Al Tayer.
“This programme aims to reach more than 3,600 primary and middle school students in 24 schools in Dubai, until the end of the current academic year. We work to achieve the Demand Side Energy Strategy, to reduce energy and water consumption by 2030. We are committed to achieving the objectives set by the MBRGI, to combat poverty and disease by contributing to finding permanent and sustainable solutions to water scarcity by using solar energy,” said Mohammed Abdulkareem Al Shamsi, Acting Executive Director of Suqia.
During the Year of Zayed, DEWA is continuing its efforts to organise initiatives and programmes that reflect the noble values and principles instilled by the late Sheikh Zayed, in the hearts of Emirati people. These include philanthropy, supporting youth, investing in education, and constant development.
