Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has concluded its first Sustainability Week by organising a voluntary day at the Jebel Ali Marine Sanctuary, in cooperation with the Emirates Marine Environment Group (EMEG). Around 80 DEWA staff volunteered to clean the beaches and plant mangroves trees. DEWA’s Sustainability Week was held from 11-15 March 2018.
“The UAE attaches great importance to sustainability. At DEWA, we work according to the vision and directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to build an economic model that is based on environmental sustainability, clean energy, and protection of natural resources for generations to come. Our cooperation with Emirates Marine Environment Group to organise a voluntary day at the Jebel Ali Marine Sanctuary during DEWA’s Sustainability Week, is part of our strategy to establish the foundations of environmental sustainability in Dubai, promote environmental awareness, instil volunteering among our staff, and encourage the public to adopt a conscious and responsible lifestyle, to preserve natural resources. This supports our vision to become a sustainable innovative world-class utility,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.
“DEWA’s first Sustainability Week supports one of the objectives of the Year of Zayed to commemorate the personality, values, and principles of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan who laid the foundations of sustainable development and voluntary work in the UAE,” added Al Tayer.
This voluntary day supports the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between DEWA and EMEG to enhance mutual cooperation between the two sides. This includes organising events and programmes related to biodiversity, and launching voluntary initiatives to support DEWA’s vision and objectives. It is also includes supporting the environmental and heritage programmes, and developing projects of common interest, especially those relate to sustainability and environmental footprint. DEWA cooperated with EMEG on the National Environment Day in February 2018 and the ‘Clean-Up the World’ campaign in November 2017 to clean up the coastal beaches of Jebel Ali Marine Sanctuary, plant mangrove trees, and release finned black seabream fish back into the sea. During 2018, DEWA will organise several voluntary environmental activities in cooperation with EMEG.
DEWA Sustainability Week 2018 featured a number of key events including the Second Sustainability Leadership Conference, in collaboration with the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership. The two-day Conference discussed several important topics related to sustainability during the Leadership Summit, and Sustainable Development Goals workshop, which aimed to raise awareness about the UN’s sustainable development goals for DEWA’s departments, with the participation of a large number of experts and specialists from around the world. The Sustainability Week also included the Youth Sustainability Forum in Etihad Museum in Dubai, in cooperation with the Dubai Youth Council. A large number of youth council members and university students from across the UAE, and DEWA’s Youth Council members took part in the forum. DEWA also held sustainability-related activities at its headquarters, including a presentation by its Climate Change Ambassadors, who went on an expedition to Tanzania in collaboration with National Geographic, to learn about the impact and implications of climate change there. DEWA’s divisions also presented their initiatives to raise awareness among staff about the Sustainable Development Goals.
