Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) honoured customers who reduce their consumption, as part of the first phase of its pilot project to encourage homeowners and households across the Emirate in implementation of the Demand Side Management Strategy, to reduce energy and water demand by 30% by 2030. This is part of DEWA’s efforts to support sustainable development in Dubai, boost the Emirate's efforts in reducing energy and water consumption, and conserve natural resources.
The project included direct communication with customers, through various communication channels. It provided them with customised reports explaining their consumption details, tips to reduce their consumption, and comparisons between electricity and water consumption, as well as those of neighbouring homes.
HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, honoured 10 customers out of 600 customers who live in Mirdif, Dubai. This is part of the first phase of the pilot project, which was implemented by DEWA, from March to June 2017.
“Under the leadership of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, Dubai has taken advanced steps in addressing water security, energy security, efficiency, conservation, and enhancing energy efficiency as key elements in sustainable development plans. DEWA contributes to the sustainable growth of the Emirate, to benefit Dubai’s citizens, residents, and visitors. Through this leading project, we are committed to transforming Dubai into a model for a smart sustainable city, in collaboration with our partners from the public and private sectors. This supports the objectives of the Dubai Plan 2021, as well as our efforts to contribute to the implementation of the Demand Side Management Strategy. The strategy aims to reduce energy and water demand by 30% by 2030 to move to a more sustainable future. This establishes a sustainable energy-saving model that supports economic growth without compromising the environment and its natural resources,” said Al Tayer.
Al Tayer commended the home and building-owners’ positive feedback in the first phase of the project. He applauded the high level of environmental and community awareness demonstrated by the participants and their efforts to reduce energy and water consumption. He noted that DEWA will continue to launch initiatives and projects to consolidate the concept of conservation between all segments of society. DEWA will also work to achieve its strategic objectives, by contributing to sustainable development in all its social, environmental, and economic levels, in Dubai.
Waleed Salman, Executive Vice President of Business Development & Excellence at DEWA, expressed his pride in the customers’ efforts to reduce energy and water consumption. He stressed that the comparisons provided by DEWA to the owners of similar and neighbouring houses constitute an effective warning tool in case their consumption level is higher than the expected rate. In these cases, customers should understand the reasons for their high consumption levels, and verify the problems or leaks, according to the advice provided by DEWA for each case.
