Today, creativity and innovation have become an urgency, not a just an intellectual luxury or added value. Due to the vision of our wise leadership, the UAE has become a global hub that attracts talents, minds, skills and innovators, from all around the world.
The UAE has an exceptional leadership that sees things from a different perspective. It creates the future of many generations, continues to achieve, and has a comprehensive vision that supports a knowledge-based economy, harnesses the latest technologies, invests in minds, and establishes innovation as regular institutional practice among government organisations.
This futuristic approach contributed to enhancing innovation. In 2014, the UAE Cabinet approved 2015 as a Year of Innovation. It urged all federal organisations to intensify efforts and review government policies to create an environment that encourages innovation in the UAE to make it rank first globally. The UAE Innovation Week was launched in August 2015, in line with the declaration of the Year of Innovation by of HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE and HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, once said: “Governments that set an example for innovation have the power to implant a nationwide culture of creativity. When such a culture takes root, people feel inspired to run further with their ideas, to aim higher with their ambitions, and to pursue bigger dreams”.
Innovation is a key pillar at Dubai Electricity and Water Authority( DEWA), in the continuous development of all operations and services, in line with its vision to become a sustainable innovative world-class utility. This helps DEWA support the National Innovation Strategy to make the UAE one of the most innovative nations in the world, and the Dubai Innovation Strategy to make Dubai the most innovative city in the world. DEWA has incorporated strategic innovation in its vision, mission and values, and raises its importance as a theme to encompass 40% of DEWA’s strategic map. DEWA has added strategic objectives within its strategy map with a focus on envisioning the future, innovation, and stakeholders’ happiness. DEWA formed an innovation team that includes experts and innovators from various divisions, supported by innovation teams at its customer happiness centres.
Over the years, DEWA’s efforts in innovation have resulted in pioneering initiatives that have enabled it to shorten time and effort, keep pace with the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and cope with the new global transformation using Artificial Intelligence (AI), Robotics, and Internet of Things (IoT). This supports the Dubai 10X initiative, which sets the Government of Dubai on a mission to be a global leader that is 10 years ahead of other cities, through government innovation.
The UAE Innovation Month is of great importance to DEWA. We see it as a unique opportunity to highlight DEWA’s efforts, initiatives, and innovations, aimed at achieving the vision of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, for the government of the future, which works for the happiness of the people and anticipates the future. As His Highness once observed, “We have to anticipate the changes that our world will inevitably go through, and take note of the changes that are already taking place – most notably, the technological revolution. If we lag behind and fail to catch up to these changes, we will have no place in the future.”
