The World Dubai
Dubai is bringing the entire world to its doorstep by constructing a $2 billion nine kilometer long offshore development project-’The World’ which will consist of a series of 250 islands, positioned strategically to form the shape of the world map.The construction of The World, conceived by General Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and UAE Defence Minister, has already started and the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2008, says Dubai-based developers Nakheel Corporation.
Each island will range from 250,000 to 900,000 square feet and there will be approximately 50 to 100 metres of water between each island. Surrounded by an oval shaped breakwater, the development will cover an area 9 km in length and 6 km in width. Access to the development will be by marine transport only-there will be no road access.
The land and infrastructure will be sold only to investors and then it will be their responsibility to construct the buildings as they require on the islands. It is thought that many investors will choose to develop their island in a theme reflecting the actual country that the island’s shape is based on with some including the replicas of monuments and landmarks from the specific countries.
Tourism to Dubai is growing exponentially, with the current number of visitors standing at 6 million due to reach 12 million by 2007, and an incredible 42 million by 2015, according to studies.
The project is part of the strategy and vision for the future of Dubai. It is also in line with the Dubai Government’s continued efforts to boost the tourism sector, which will play a major role to diversify the sources of income. This is the first time in the world that an island project of this size and magnitude has been undertaken.
