About the Exhibit:
Dubai’s Gallery IVDE, the former B21 Gallery, hosts an installation by Algerian artist Zoulikha Bouabdellah. Giant and colorful Arabic letters hang from the wall forming the sentence Set Me Free from My Chains, which creates a remarkably visceral spectacle.
Deceptively simple, the elements are familiar - strings of neon twisted to form colourful letters, yet their unconventional positioning and movement are suggestive of Hobb (Arabic for love), the product of a rigorous process of conceptual and formal reasoning, which defies the border between representation and abstraction.
