There are approximately 32,000 golf courses worldwide and 50 million people play golf throughout the world. There are more than 7,000 golf courses and 4.2 million registered golfers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. On an 18-hole course in the UAE, 48,200 rounds are played per year, far more than in other countries in the region (nearly 39,700). Annual revenues at golf courses in the UAE average approximately euro 5.9million, four times more than the second best performer, Portugal. 18-hole golf courses in the Middle East have significantly higher utilization (62 per cent) than courses in other regions. Eastern European courses are the least utilized, below 20per cent on average.
Courses in the Middle East employ significantly more staff than in other regions: close to 250 people on average, with close to 100 people in the food and beverage department. The average staffing of golf courses is the lowest in Northern Europe (about 12 people). It may be noted here that many golf courses in the Northern Europe receive help from members on a voluntary basis.
The average construction cost of an 18-hole course varies widely, with the lowest recorded in Eastern Europe, at an average cost of 1.25million euros to the most expensive in the Middle East, costing on average 6.14 million euros.
